On April 27, 2011, a series of violent storms ravaged the state, leaving behind a trail of destruction that would forever change the lives of many. Among the first responders was Staff Sergeant Michael McCollum, a dedicated Alabama National Guardsman. Deployed to the hardest-hit areas of Tuscaloosa, SSG McCollum witnessed the sheer scale of devastation but also something far more profound—the overwhelming response of compassion and solidarity from across the nation.

Strangers from all walks of life converged on the disaster zones, offering everything from donations and hot meals to hands-on assistance, embodying the very best of the American spirit. However, amidst this outpouring of support, there were those who sought to exploit the vulnerable, casting a shadow over the acts of kindness. It was this stark contrast that illuminated SSG McCollum’s path forward.
